2010 SUMMER CLASSES

JUNIOR DRAWING - Grades K-1
A good way to start your child’s exposure to “real” art. This class teaches the drawing basics utilizing the same variety of art materials as the drawing classes. Designed for the mature younger child who has both good small muscle control and attention san.


DRAWING - Grades 2-5 / Grades 6-10
The foundation for all art, this class draws a wide variety of subjects while focusing on classical drawing basics such as composition, perspective and shading. Students will learn techniques in various mediums such as pencil,charcoal, India ink, pastel and Prismacolor pencils.


ANIMAL DRAWING - Grades 2-5 / 6-10
Learn about and draw a different animal each day. Focus is on understanding and drawing animal conformation and appropriate techniques for creating fur, feathers, and other animal textures.

WATERCOLOR - Grades 2-5 / 6-12

Watercolor is FUN when you know how to do it! Emphasis is on mastering techniques such as wash, dry brush, wet-into-wet, salt, scoring, scraping, resist & spatter to create still lifes and landscapes. We use tube watercolors, professional brushes and good quality watercolor paper. A great way to discover the joy of painting!

MULTIMEDIA - Grades 3-6
Offered in the summer only, each day will focus on a fine art medium that most childen have not experienced: CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING - grind the ink and use bamboo brushes to paint on ricepaper, PRINTMAKING - create a printing block and use brayers to ink and print the image, SCRATCHBOARD - use metal scraping tools to scratch out a white image on a black board, ACRYLIC PAINTING on canvas.

FACES/ADVANCED DRAWING - Grades 7-12

Unlock the secrets to drawing faces successfully. We’ll do self portraits and also pose for each other while learning how to draw features in profile, full face and three-quarter view. Strong emphasis on learning techniques for features, hair and shading. Students may also pursue subject matter other than faces if desired. This is an ongoing class and can be taken by both new and continuing students.

CARTOONING - Grades 6-12

This popular class is offered only in the summer. Students will be helped to invent an original cartoon character and learn how to draw it from different angles and with various facial expressions. After selecting their favorite pose to transfer onto wet media acetate, they'll use marker and gouache paint to create an original cell painting of their character.


OIL PAINTING - Grades 7-12
*PREREQUISITE: Minimum of 2 full years of drawing classes or portfolio review.
Long considered the penultimate in art, oil painting is great fun - coupled with a steep learning curve. After the initial two assigned paintings, students work independently on subject matter of their own choosing. New oil students should register for a minimum of 2 sessions. Supplies are not included for this class as students are enouraged to paint at home.
